Bailiwick Terroir

I was running through a school that I didn’t recognize but knew I attended. I don’t know what I was running from or where I was going. I went up a small flight of stairs and hid in a bathroom. I was upset but I don’t know why.

Two of my former teachers helped me out. They walked me down the stairs and outside. I confessed to them about my depression and the rough time I’ve been having. I started to feel better.

The sun was setting and we walked by a garden sale. There were tons of potted flowers and they were beautiful. I commented to the others that even the few dead plants in the glow of the sunset look beautiful. We sat and these two little creatures came out they were about the size and shape of a small turtleshell, only there were no appendages on the sides. They had tiny legs underneath and kind of waddle-glided. Their shells were grey-green topped with a small dark marking that look like a button plus the small spikes of a cog wheel. This exoskeleton was segmented and the pieces moved with them like overlapping scales.

One of the ladies seemed to know what they were, and said “Aw, cute! You guys must have come a long way!” I assumed they must be some foreign animal that had snuck in with the flowers. One came over to me and jumped onto my left leg, just above the foot. I tried to kick it off but it wouldn’t move. It was attached to me somehow.

I became afraid. I asked “what is it?”

“Oh. It’s an insect, kind if like a parasite. But these are bigger than I’ve seen before.”

That’s when I noticed the other one was attached to my right leg. They were hurting me. Like a dull but deep pain that I couldn’t quite identify the source. I passed out, my head hitting the concrete as I saw them others come over to see what was wrong. Everything went black.

I opened my eyes and the creatures were gone from my legs. I looked down where the had been. There was a hole in my dock and into my leg. It had burrowed deep into my leg through the skin and muscle to the dark crimson inside. The same on the other leg, again just above the foot. I wasn’t bleeding though. It was as if they had taken all my blood to bleed.

I awoke thoroughly creeped out.
