On commitment devices and a better? self, Part 1
I have been thinking a lot over the past week about what economists call “commitment devices” after listening to Freakonomic’s show “Save Me From Myself.” As Dubner and Levitt explain:
“To understand how a commitment device works — if it does work — you have to picture two versions of yourself: the current you and the future you. Sometimes it’s the...

Patience?
One of my worst flaws is impatience. When I like someone, I can be a little over-zealous. While it’s not really the same, I’m going to try to learn some patience by refraining from using—and even opening—the new power drill I bought last week. If this works maybe next I can work on temperance.

Really quite cute.
This old couple were in for lunch today, and the husband was hard of hearing and I suspect had difficulty seeing as well.
Both when I took their drink order and their lunch order, she ordered first and he followed with “I’ll have what she’s having.” I suspect this is the way it goes every time they go out and I think it’s adorable.

I had a very strange dream last night
I was running through a school that I didn’t recognize but knew I attended. I don’t know what I was running from or where I was going. I went up a small flight of stairs and hid in a bathroom. I was upset but I don’t know why.
Two of my former teachers helped me out. They walked me down the stairs and outside. I confessed to them about my depression and the rough time...

I go into Lowe’s to get a $2 light bulb and end up lusting over the $600 table saw.

Today I overheard
This older couple was talking about their granddaughter about to be married.
“She’s 20 and he’s 21. That’s young. At least if the marriage doesn’t work out, she’ll still be young enough to have children with another man.”
